Squirrels versus Rattlesnakes: the Evolution of Unique Antipredator Behavior -- NHM Speaker Series Presentation by Dr. Barbara Clucas

Certain ground squirrel species in North America have evolved unique antipredator behavior to deal with rattlesnake predation. Dr. Barbara Clucas, Associate Professor in the Department of Wildlife at Cal Poly Humboldt studied this fascinating predator-prey relationship in California ground squirrels and other species for her PhD work at the University of California, Davis. This presentation will cover how ground squirrels can survive rattlesnake bites and how they harass and attack rattlesnakes, and it will also focus on how squirrels apply snake scent to their bodies to reduce predation risk.
